1953 MG TD MK II was purchased from my local parts store owner.
He had several stores and was buying out his partner and the
car came with it. He did not want it but knew I had MGs so we
made a deal.
The
factory made 29,614 MG TDs 1,700 were MK IIs. They had larger
valves, heavier valve springs, two fuel pumps, four adjustable
Andrex shock absorbers and some trim pieces. The remaining car
was standard independent front suspension, rack and pinion steering,
12,500 cc push rod 4 cylinder engine, 2 SU
carburetors, 4 speed transmission, hydraulic drum brakes and
5 lug disc wheels. They had 3 more hp. The axle ratio was changed
to 4.875. The clutch size was increased to eight inches including
a new flywheel, bell housing and clutch cross shaft. A six quart
finned oil pan was included. The TD was significantly heavier
than prior TC. Therefore the additional 5% horsepower of the
MK II made the TD faster than the TC and the regular TD so the
SCCA created a different class for the TD MK II.
This
car is very original mechanically but has chrome radiator slats
and head lights, the fenders are dark tan and the body is a
yellowish cream. I believe it was an attempt at the cream crackers
brown & cream racing colors of the 30's and the colors in
the MG octagon logo. Someone created a very nice mahogany desk
and matching steering wheel. The upholstery is incorrect black
vinyl.
Every mechanical item of the car has been rebuilt and it is
a very good runner. We have done a little head work and carburetor
flow work on it and it performs very well for a 1250 cc engine.
